  • Product:
    ExtremeZ-IP
  • Version:
    3.1-5.2.1x5
  • Document Type:
    Bug
  • Revised:

  • Reviewed:
    6/25/2008

Symptom:

Mac user in Office 2008 SP1 attempts to open a file (.doc/.xls) by double clicking or dragging the file onto the application (Word/Excel). A new blank document opens instead of the file selected.

You can still open such files within the application by choosing: File > Open > {select file}

Steps to Reproduce:

ExtremeZ-IP and Services for Macintosh

  1. From Windows, create a .doc file and a .xls file. Since the files are created by Windows, the type/creator information should be blank.

  2. From a Mac client using Office 2008 SP1, connect to the server using AFP and double click to open the file with no type/creator information.

  3. When no type/creator information exists, both ExtremeZ-IP and SFM will write type/creator codes associated with DOC and XLS extensions recently depricated in Office 2008 SP1.

  4. Office 2008 SP1 will fail to open files via the Finder (double click/drag onto application).

You can still open such files within the application by choosing: File > Open > {select file}

Cause:

Office 2008 SP1 depricated the type/creator codes historically associated with DOC and XLS files.

Currently, ExtremeZ-IP uses the following values to map DOC and XLS files with blank type/creator codes:

  • Word: TYPE=WDBN, CREATOR= MSWD

  • Excel: TYPE=XLBN, CREATOR= XCEL

Office 2008 SP1 now requires:

  • Word: TYPE=W8BN, CREATOR= MSWD

  • Excel: TYPE=XLS8, CREATOR= XCEL

Workaround:

{Updated on 6/25/2008 – see fix}

To work around this issue you can update the default associations within ExtremeZ-IP Administrator > Settings > Type and Creator:

  1. Add new type/creator codes.

    • For DOC, click Add and enter the information: Type: W8BN, Creator: MSWD, Comment: Microsoft Word 2008.

    • For XLS, click Add and enter the information: Type: XLS8, Creator: XCEL, Comment: Excel 2008.

  2. Associate new codes with extensions.

    • Select DOC from the pull down list under “Files with MS-DOS Extensions” and while “Microsoft Word 2008″ is selected, click the Associate Button.

    • Select XLS from the pull down list under”Files with MS-DOS Extensions” and while “Excel 2008″ is selected, click the Associate Button.

In order for the changes to take effect you will need to restart the ExtremeZ-IP Service.

  1. Select Start.

  2. Select Run.

  3. Type services.msc.
  4. Right click “ExtremeZ-IP File and Print Server for Macintosh” and select “Restart”.

  5. Settings.

    Note:
    This workaround is only valid for ExtremeZ-IP and will not fix problems with Services for Macintosh. The workaround for Services for Macintosh is to open the file using: File > Open. Saving the file should correct the type/creator infomation and allow it to be opened by double clicking from that point on.
