I’m having a problem down here.

Setup and configure is basically easy. My problem is that any Macintosh user has access to the device. We’re working on a Windows 2003 domain and we need just a group of users to use this share.

I’ve created a folder on a server, give access just to this group but anyway, from any Macintosh I can see, log, write, etc. into this share. What am I doing wrong?

Customer running outdated versions of ExtremeZ-IP with the latest 10.5.8 Mac update are likely to encounter a -36 error when opening a file off the network.

The error seems specific to double clicking the file to open. The problem doesn't appear to happen when using "File > Open".

Solution - upgrade to the latest version of ExtremeZ-IP
http://support.grouplogic.com/?page_id=63

Note: for customers running Windows 2000, you must install version 5.4 (last version to support Windows 2000).

It sounds like there may be some issue with permissions. I would suggest opening a support request providing specific steps to explain how to reproduce the problem, error messages, permissions on the file and parent folder both before and after making edits.

Hi rawales2,

We found a problem with 10.4.11 Mac clients and Adobe files which contain Comments. Trying to copy such files to the desktop or duplicating the files on the server cause the finder to beach ball and then disconnect.

Downgrading to 6.0x62 should correct the problem.
We are working on a hot fix to post ASAP (if not next week then soon after.

Regards,

Did this fix the issue? I was seeing similar issues and then installed 6.1. That fixed this particular issue (without enabling unix support) but I am seeing another issue where some files seem to be inaccessible. When we try to copy them from the server, mac clients beach ball and then all their network connections drop, finder freezes and you need to restart.

More Troubleshooting steps:

To start: Please review the follow knowledgebase article: INFO: Creating Active Directory Integrated Home Directories
http://support.grouplogic.com/?p=1557

Troubleshooting:
Manually connecting to the server and share from a Mac client:
- Delete Kerberos Ticket and any Keychain passwords for the Volume
- Go > Connect to Server > afp://ipaddress or hostname (not afp://server/volume/share)
- You should be presented with an Authentication Window (enter username password)
- Do you see "Home" presented as a Volume? If so, are you able to mount this volume?
- If you can mount Home, are you able to see your home folder? Are other home folders displayed or hidden?
- Note that our Home Directory works when home folders are located at the root of the Volume.
i.e. if D:\Home is the Volume, D:\Home\2009\charles is not supported (2009 must be shared out with Home Directory support enabled).

If the above items appear to work normally, then Single Sign On Home Directories should also work after confirming the following:
1) Check Profile Paths for case sensitivity mismatches
Open the ExtremeZ-IP Administrator > Settings > File Server > Enable Home Directory Support
Are you using the "Profile" or "Username" setting?
- If you are using the username setting then the username folders on NTFS should match the AD username (thomash not thomash$)
- With the Use Profile setting, check the path in AD. The path is case sensitive for Mac 10.4 and later.
In other words: D:\Home is not the same as D:\home

If you are still having any trouble check the following.

2) Check for Time skews which can cause Kerberos failures
Confirm all Mac clients, DCs, and ExtremeZ-IP servers/Target servers (if using DFS) are all synchronized to some central time-server.

3) If your Server Principle Names (SPNs) are not registered with the fully qualified host name, Leopard (but not Tiger) will not resolve.
Example (setspn is available from the Microsoft site): --- http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892777
afpserver/hostname.domain.com (now required for Leopard)
afpserver/hostname (will fail beginning with Leopard)

Also for future cases you can open a support request from our website.
http://support.grouplogic.com/?page_id=39&product=extremez-ip

Hi,
We are trying implement MAC home dirs on the server - but we cannot get it working!

All mac users logon with an AD account, and we have created a volumen for Home dirs and marked the volumen as "Use volumen as home directory".
We have checked "Enable home dir support" and set "Use user name as home directory".

After logging on/off a couple of times nothing happens!

What can be wrong??

I have a connection which often has problems. If there is trouble on connecting, it generates an error: "TCP/IP reports: Unknown error. (10054)". And since I have it set to delay 30 minutes for the next try it logs "Automatic calls to XXX will be delayed for 30 minute(s) due to errors." But within a minute it tries to connect again and generates the same error repetitively every minute. So I finally have to disable the connection until. Why does the delay not work?

As far as file transfer size limitation is concerned, MassTransit has a theoretical limit of 2e64 bytes (or 18446744073709551616 bytes). This limitation applies to both (a) the maximum size of a single file being transferred and to (b) the maximum size of all files in a particular job.

One of our users was attempting to transfer a large zip file to one of our contacts. The zip was 2.06G in size. It failed, generating a #-1309 error. I am guessing that MT has a 2G limit on filesize. Or perhaps the limit is on the workstation running MT on the receiving size. Does that sound right?

I unpacked the zip. Broke it up into smaller groupings and sent them. They transmitted fine.

Glad to be of assistance. On the question about the remaining empty folders. If you are asking whether or not the empty Output To Servicename folder can be removed automatically by MassTransit from the Received folder for the contact, the short answer is no. They can be deleted manually or we can script that for you (scripting would involve a fee and I can ask our sales team to contact you are interested in having us do that for you).

Hi Colleen - Your suggestion worked like a charm. I set up Forward Via contacts on both satellites to send to each other. Both have Output To folders to segregate the publications and matching services. The files arrive in the appropriate Output To without leaving behind any empty folders on the enterprise server.

Now, do you have an equivalent trick when using a drop folder service just between satellite and enterprise. For certain files, we want the incoming file to be moved to a hotfolder. So I have the drop folder service enabled and the hotfolder is the destination of the service. When files arrive from the satellite in the Output to folder that matches that service it moves them to the appropriate hotfolder, but it leaves behind empty folders in the Output to folder.

John, instead of using the drop folder service or move/copy actions to send the files to the other Satellite, you can set up a contact in the address book for the second Satellite. The outgoing call communication method will be "forward via". Make sure that the contact matches the one on the Enterprise server for the second Satellite. Please also make sure that the "process all received files" box is checked off on the Security tab for the second Satellite on the Enteprise Server and that any automatic call settings have been set on the Outgoing Calls tab. When you send a file using this method a new address book entry will be created for your Satellite in the second Satellite's address book.

If the files still need to be processed by a drop folder service for the second Satellite, those files will need to be in an Output To "servicename" folder where "servicename" matches an existing service on the second Satellite.

If you still have questions, please feel free to contact us at 800-476-8781 x2601.

I have a 2 satellite servers that need to send files thru my enterprise server. One satellite has Output to folders for the other satellite. On my enterprise server I have an Action that moves the files from the Received/Output To folder in the mailbox of the sending satellite to the Send To/Output To folder in the mailbox for the receiving satellite. This works fine. But it always leaves behind empty folders after finishing the move. Is there any way to get it not to leave behind the empty folders?

Brian reported that the problem was resolved by re-installing ExtremeZ-IP.

We suspect that somehow the "ExtremeZIP Print 5.2x05.pkg" had become corrupted.

Running the installer would have replaced the contents of the entire “C:\ExtremeZ-IP Print Support\” share – including the corrupted ExtremeZIP Print 5.2x05.pkg installer.

Replacing the ExtremeZIP Print 5.2x05.pkg (instead of re-installing) would have most likely solved the problem as well.

Best Regards,

To solve your immediate problem you should upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5.7, which will resolve the search problem introduced by 10.5.6.

ExtremeZ-IP 6.0 now supports Network Spotlight requests from Mac clients, providing indexed search results from any folder or sub-folder, for any OS X 10.5 client (including 10.5.6).

The following is a more technical answer to your question about sub-folder searching without Network Spotlight:

The Mac OS performs two types of files searches: catalog searches and enumeration searches. A catalog search issues a search request that is processed on the server side. This is the type of request that ExtremeZ-IP indexed searching responds to. The Mac OS only issues a catalog search request when the user is searching the root of a volume. For this reason, it is only technically possible to provide indexed search results for searches initiated at the root of a volume.

As an example,
- If you searched against a 10.4 Xserve volume at the subfolder level, you would see the same behavior (non-indexed if search is not done at the root).
- If you searched against a 10.5 Xserve volume at the subfolder level, 10.4 clients would use non-indexed search and 10.5 clients would use Network Spotlight

If you enable Network Spotlight support in ExtremeZ-IP 6.0:
- 10.4 clients will still be able to do a catalog search at the root, or non-indexed enumeration search at the sub-folder level
- 10.5 clients will be able to use Network Spotlight (at the root or subfolder)

The issue with searching not working in 10.5.6 was brought to my attention by one of our users today. FWIW I didn't find the workaround usable since most of our documents are Acrobat, InDesign, Quark or Keynote (although a good amount are also MS Word). And keyword searching is more important than filename.

I realize it is not a GL problem per se but it did highlight an issue my users had been complaining for some time about, intermittent slow searches. I thought it was due to the amount of files we have (339GB/121K files/7K folders).

One of the major selling points for the product is the 600X searching speed! However I was suprised to learn that the default searches at the subfolder level do not use this method and "fall-back" to a slow non-indexed search.

Per the article: "Please note that while this will restore the ability for clients to find files and folders in a search, this backup method is non-indexed, and therefore can be very slow.

This backup method has _always_ been used when clients perform a search against a subfolder of an ExtremeZ-IP volume. These types of searches continue to work without any change to server settings, but these searches are also non-indexed, and performance is much worse than when using indexed search. "

I'm quite suprised by this. Is there a reason that searching through sub folders cannot be fast (indexed) as well? There are many instances when we don't want the massive amount of results from an entire volume.

Marc,

You can control password expiration for Web Clients by going to Setup>Security. The parameter you are looking for is under "Web Login Settings".

To disable the "My Account" tab for Web Clients, open the web application's configuration file, called "mtweb.ini" and locate the following section:

# Enable/Disable My Account tab and password change for clients.
# true to enable, false to disable.
# Disabling will also redirect clients back to the login screen if # their password expires.
MY_ACCOUNT_TAB_ENABLED = "true"

Just set the parameter to "false". No need to restart MassTransit or IIS.

Do passwords expire in MT (5 or 6) at all?

I have a generic account set up for one of my vendors and I keep having to reset the password for them.

Either: a) the password is expiring
or
b) the user is resetting the password in the account tab.

If a) is it possible to diable this?
If b) is it possible to remove the account tab for all users so that these changes can only be done by and admin?

thanks in advance

Hi Danny,

We just released ExtremeZ-IP 6.0, which fixes a few problems with permissions and may solve your problem. You can download it from: http://www.grouplogic.com/files/glidownload/ezipreleases.cfm

Once ExtremeZ-IP 6.0 is installed:
1) Open Settings to Security, enable Unix Support (requires you enter a Directory Services Account).

2) Confirm Creator/Owner has full control on the root of the share and propagates to Subfolders and Files.

Let me know if the problem continues and we can open a support case.

We have some users running OS X 10.5 and when they copy files from the server to their machine locally some of the files permissions are set to No Access. The users then have to get info on the file, change the owner to themselves, and change the access to read & write.

NO CRASH REPORT

** As the crash report above shows, the problem is with the "translate" command. This command serves as Rosetta to allow PPC applications to run on Intel Macs.

Some of the updates provided by Apple did not include a working version of the "translate" command. For some, running the most recent combo updater will repair this issue. Unfortunately this "fix" doesn't work for all.

If not, check your "translate" command:

/usr/libexec/oah/translate

This version dated 5/23/2008 and newer will work correctly. In some cases, you can copy from another computer within your organization. Otherwise, please contact Group Logic Technical Support and we will supply you with a working version of this command.

When MT is doing a scheduled Outgoing Call over FTP (say, every 30 mins), if the remote server does not responde, MT then seems to retry every 20 seconds or so to re-establish the connection.

Once the remote FTP server starts responding again, MT reverts to the normal Outgoing Call interval that has been set. Can the connection retry interval be altered when a remote FTP server does not respond?
